Study shows how parents' reactions impact GLBT youth
There's a fascinating article in this week's Bay Windows about the new study by the Family Acceptance Project at San Francisco State University. The research confirms and amplifies what we've always known: Family acceptance or rejection is a huge influence in the self-esteem and behavior of GLBT young people. But it also confirms that the opportunity to interact with GLBT peers and participate in group activities is vitally important:
Among the most damaging behaviors were when parents either forbade their children to be friends with other LGBT young people or when they blocked their access to LGBT activities or organizations, such as gay/straight alliances or community-based LGBT youth groups.
